About the role:

This role applies expertise in machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) to develop and deploy computational models that drive scientific advantage and patient impact using data which we generate or access.

  • Responsible for designing, implementing, deploying and maintaining modern ML/AI methods to generate value from the data generated or accessed by the Platform for Clinical Data Sciences and other LifeArc groups.
  • Supports the end-to-end lifecycle of the ML/AI models and applications on cloud infrastructure. 
  • Leads others on best practices for development, deployment and MLOps. 
  • Identifies new opportunities where ML/AI methods can be applied. 
  • Keeps up to date with current ML/AI approaches, best practices and tools associated with ML engineering and MLOps.
  • Works across Data Science and within relevant LifeArc project teams to ensure the proper application of ML/AI methods and resulting models.
  • Contributes expertise to the assessment and due diligence of potential external opportunities that use/develop ML/AI methods.
  • Combines technical expertise with increasing understanding of business needs to identify the most appropriate routes to bringing ML/AI methods to impact.
  • Makes effective use of coding skills, automation and end management of the lifecycle of ML models to develop own practical solution(s) to problems, applying best practices in algorithm and software development.
  • Works closely with other colleagues in Data Sciences, and colleagues from other LifeArc groups to understand opportunities and priorities for ML/AI.
  • Keeps up to date on new developments in this very fast-moving field.

 

Education & experience required: 

  • Higher level degree in a relevant discipline such as computer science, machine learning or a relevant scientific or quantitative field involving application of ML/AI methods.
  • Experience of developing machine learning models, ideally tackling real-world challenges in a life sciences or healthcare context.
  • Experience across the ML development lifecycle from research to deployment, with knowledge of MLOps, CI/CD and automation.
  • Extensive programming experience and strong software engineering expertise in the context of productionising AI/ML.

 

 

Skills & abilities:

  • Ability to work with a research team building complex ML models such as neural networks applied to areas such as imaging, NLP, omics or multimodal data.
  • Ability to provide technical leadership on best practices in development, including code and data version control, reproducibility of experiments, documentation and environment management.
  • Ability to work independently, to manage time and work to deadlines.
  • Strong team player, both within own discipline and within a matrix organisation.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
