Translational Challenge
Antimicrobial Resistance
Tackling one of the top 10 global health threats.
Antimicrobial resistance could wipe out our ability to treat infections, leaving us exposed from even the most minor injuries or illnesses.
Like most global health challenges, drug-resistant infections are complex; different regions and countries face different obstacles. Low and middle-income countries are disproportionately affected.
39 million
people could lose their lives to AMR between 2025 and 2050
$3.5b USD
the cost per year on healthcare alone from 2015 to 2050 (World Bank)
What do we want to achieve?
We want to slow the emergence of resistant infections and reduce deaths from AMR by:
- driving better use of existing treatments
- developing new targeted therapies, including diagnostics
- improving the ability to diagnose and treat resistant infections
How you can work with us
We collaborate and invest in efforts to:
Discover new antibacterials
Develop rapid, low-cost, point of care diagnostics
Better define the patient experience and unmet need
Understand the challenges faced by low and middle-income countries and help develop tailored solutions
Some of our partnerships and initiatives
PACE: Pathways to Antimicrobial Clinical Efficacy
A £30 million initiative with Innovate UK and Medicines Discovery Catapult, driving new developments to tackle antimicrobial resistance.
Fleming Initiative partnership: Partnering to tackle the threat of antimicrobial resistance
We have become a founding partner of a new multidisciplinary initiative working to combat the spread of antimicrobial resistance.
ReACT Africa
A project aimed at tackling antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Zambia and Kenya.
TB-MBLA
